4:30 p.m. – The moment TV stations announce lottery results, workers and employees return home after a day of work, and the children selling tickets on the streets begin their own struggle to make a living.
The impressive performances of the child actors, the skill in choosing camera angles, frames and the certainty in the editing of 16:30 helped Tran Dung Thanh Huy graduate as valedictorian in directing from the University of Theater.
2. `The Room` – International competition (watch movie)
The film begins with the image of a man desperately throwing himself into a solid metal door in an attempt to escape.
Director Nguyen Hong Quan’s room has a sci-fi feel and affirms the stylistic diversity of YxineFF 2012. The film’s special effects when creating scenes of destruction and ruin also create certain effects.
3. `Uncle & Son` – International competition (watch movie)
Set on a small island in the Southwest, Director Nguyen Dinh Anh’s Two Uncles is about a boy abandoned by his parents who lives with his uncle who works as a tailor.
The film has many beautiful angles, especially in close-ups such as the child’s rubbing and touching feet, the uncle’s suddenly stopping scissors, and the neighbors’ chatty mouths symbolizing public opinion.
4. `The Man in The Fish Bowl` – International competition (watch movie)
The Man in the Fishbowl has no plot or story, just a series of internally conflicting emotions of a man.
The film by two young people Le Lam Vien and Do Nhu Trang impresses with its meticulous scenes, picturesque frames and good visual thinking.
5. `Xiao Tong (Tiny Pupil)` – International competition (watch movie)
The film paints two opposing worlds: the tired, monotonous world of adults and the joyful, colorful world of children.
Xiao Tong is set in the context of Chinese society but addresses eternal issues such as outdated education styles, inhibiting human development, and the unequal struggle between asserting oneself and pressure from society.
6. `On Duty with Shu Qui (On Duty with Shu Qui)` – International competition (watch movie)
The story begins when Thu, a rebellious hotgirl who is admired and envied by the whole school, is moved to sit at the same table with Phong, an eccentric guy who is often ridiculed and despised by others.
With a natural, calm narrative style, director Do Quoc Trung boldly brought to the screen topics that have traditionally been considered taboo such as sexual feelings during puberty, school violence, and sexual harassment trends.
7. `The Story of Ones` – Regional competition (watch movie)
Throughout Every Family Story are monologues of radio and television programs.
There are more sad stories than happy stories, but the characters’ reactions in the movie are still the same: passive, absent-minded and emotionless.
8. `Human Forming` – Regional competition (watch movie)
The main character in Human Casting is a worker named Mui.
Based on a familiar fairy tale, Duc carries a not-new but never-old message about the law of `evil, evil will be rewarded` in life.
9. `Innocent Memory` – Regional competition (watch movie)
Innocent Memory is an experimental animation film with absolutely no plot, mainly built around the melody of reciting poetry.
Innocent Memory is a graduation film by young director Nam Phuong at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
10. `One Day` – Regional competition (watch movie)
The grandfather clock leisurely struck 6, the tired man stood up and walked towards the bathroom.
A day that impressed with excellent makeup techniques, beautiful camera angles and concise, meticulous staging.
