Photos of Aylan’s body washing up on a beach near the port city of Bodrum, Türkiye, touched millions of hearts around the world, after the boat carrying his family capsized.
The Sun said the 18-year-old hotel employee felt heartbroken by what he witnessed.
`I couldn’t eat anything, I couldn’t sleep, I could only think about my two children,` Demirtas shared.
The boy’s body was found yesterday in Bodrum, a popular resort in southwestern Turkey.
The image of ships carrying families crowded above has become all too familiar to Demirtas over the past few months.
A week ago, Demirtas also witnessed a boat carrying 10 people capsize.
`They were more than 800 meters from shore so I couldn’t help. I heard screams and cries but there was nothing I could do,`Â Demirtas said.
Every day Demirtas sees the clothes of drowned refugees washing ashore.
Abdullah Kurdi, father of Aylan and Galip, went to the morgue in the Turkish city yesterday to identify the bodies of three relatives.
`I just wanted to see my children one last time and be with them forever,` The Sun quoted Abdullah as sharing.
Abdullah was pained when both his wife and two sons died while the family was on their way to the `promised land`.
