On October 30, a leader of the Ministry of Transport said that after the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung on expanding Noi Bai airport, the Ministry of Transport will find capital to hire a research consultant.

Also according to this person, the Civil Aviation Authority once proposed to expand the airport to the north instead of the south as previously planned, but this proposal was not based on an overall study and assessment, so the Ministry of Transport has not yet decided.

Two areas are being studied to expand Noi Bai airport.

In 2016, the Civil Aviation Authority studied two options to expand Noi Bai airport north and south after 2020.

With the southern expansion plan as approved in the planning, new construction items after 2020 include parallel runway 2A, 1.7 km south of the current runway 1B;

However, according to the assessment of the Department of Aviation, implementing expansion to the south will be very difficult because of the current dense population density, making site clearance costs very large.

Therefore, the Aviation Department has petitioned the Ministry of Transport to allow research towards expanding the airport to the north.

According to a traffic expert, from now until 2030, Noi Bai must build runway No. 3 and a passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million, to increase the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers by 2030.

Noi Bai Airport needs to expand because it is showing signs of load efficiency.

According to Hanoi Traffic Planning to 2030, vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, by 2020, Noi Bai will reach 4E airport level with passenger traffic of 20-25 million and over 260,000 tons of cargo.

However, currently, passenger traffic through Noi Bai airport has reached 25 million passengers, equivalent to the design capacity of terminals T1 and T2.

From this current situation, at a working session in Noi Bai in mid-October 2018, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung requested the Ministry of Transport to proactively work with scientists and capable consulting units to review

The Deputy Prime Minister directed that, in the immediate future, the Ministry of Transport review the planning of the northern region to increase the scale of exploitation capacity to 50 million passengers/year, and at the same time research and develop the south, ensuring that by the year
